Known as the ‘Whiskey Route’, Machame approaches Kilimanjaro from the south-west through varied scenery — rainforest, moorland, alpine desert — and gives strong acclimatization thanks to a longer duration and the ‘climb high, sleep low’ pattern built into most itineraries.
Day 1: Machame Gate – Machame Camp (rainforest). Day 2: Machame Camp – Shira Camp (moorland). Day 3: Shira Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp (acclimatization day). Day 4: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp. Day 5: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp. Day 6: Barafu Camp – Summit (Uhuru Peak) – Mweka Camp. Day 7: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate, descent complete.
